GA Architect 9: Shin Takamatsu by Riichi Miyake (ed. Yukio Futagawa; A.D.A. Edita Tokyo 1990) gives a thorough introduction to Takamatsu’s works 1975–89.
Many architects throughout history have regarded a building’s relationship to light as being the essence of architecture. Individuals of all kinds, enraptured by the light that pours down from the heavens and floods that atmosphere have designed buildings. it is scarcely necessary to go back to Plato’s Republic to know that light has always been an important medium, sanctifying man’s experience and elevating his spirit (…)
Shin Takamatsu is entirely different in character from such architects of light. He deliberately shuts out light and attempts to create dark, submerged spaces. He concerns himself with faint bits of radiance in settings of gloom as if the revealing light of day were distasteful to him. Takamatsu seems immersed in a world to which Mediterranean clarity and Californian optimism are equally alien.
