Heikkinen + Komonen (ed. William Morgan; Monacelli Press 2000) presents selected projects from the renowned Finnish architectural practice established by architects Mikko Heikkinen and Markku Komonen in 1978. Introduction by Juhani Pallasmaa.
The Helsinki architectural studio Heikkinen – Komonen is foremost among a generation of Finnish designers who are heirs to their country’s great modern architects: Alvar Aalto, Eliel Saarinen, Reima and Raili Pietilä, Aulis Blomstedt, and Aarno Ruusuvuori. The architects’ characteristic compositions and materials – collages of geometric forms, metal screening, industrial materials, suspended sails, clear and colored glass – are related to the philosophy and aesthetics of minimalist, conceptual, and earth art. Equally influential is a rigorous examination of the program and especially the context – notably context in relation to a global conception of time and space. Among the twenty-two projects featured are the spectacular Finnish Embassy in Washington, D.C.; the new McDonalds’ Headquarters in Helsinki; the striking Airport Terminal in Rovaniemi; ensembles of buildings at the Emergency Services College in Kuopio and the European Film College in Ebeltoft, Denmark; the award-winning Heureka Finnish Science Center in Vantaa; a series of small buildings in the villages of Guinea in West Africa; and several competition entries.
Komonen and Heikkinen simply have the wisdom of knowing when not to say something in order to make a point–through mystical denial substance is nourished.
