In Detail: Building Skins – Concepts, Layers, Materials (ed. Christian Schittich, Birkhäuser Edition Detail 2001) is the 2nd volume in the In Detail series. The book examines facade design through the works of leading international architects, including Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners, Frank O. Gehry, Rafael Moneo, Wiel Arets, Shigeru Ban, Gigon/Guyer, and Kazuyo Sejima, among others.
The book comprises expert articles on facade design by Christian Schittich, Weber Lang, and Roland Krippner. The central part of the book presents international projects from houses to stadiums. All the texts are in English, and the rich illustration consists of high-quality photographs and detailed architectural drawings.
In recent years the facades of a building have become increasingly significant due to unconventional choices of materials and the use of innovative technology. More and more the external surfaces are being perceived and designed as an integral part of the building. This skin, a protective mantle, defines not only the interior but also the adjoining exterior space. It is the visiting card of the building.
