Experimental Houses by Nicolas Pope presents 42 contemporary buildings that explore the limits of contemporary housing design.
The book opens with a historical review of experimental houses over the last 500 years – with a particular focus on the 20th century – covering work of Adolf Loos, Mies van Der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Pierre Chareau, Frank Lloyd Wright and others. The presented projects are organised by type: mobile and temporary homes, prefabricated houses, ecological houses, cluster houses, infill houses, conversions and re-use and one-offs. Internationally renowned architects featured include Shigeru Ban, Herzog & de Meuron, Steven Holl, OMA/Rem Koolhaas, Kazuyo Sejima and Jørn Utzon.
The illustration consists of colour and black-and-white photographs, architectural drawings and archive illustrations. The text is in English.
