Matter and Mind in Architecture contains eleven essays that are based on the invited keynote talks at the 7th Alvar Aalto Symposium in Jyväskylä in 2000. The authors are Karsten Harries, Vittorio Gregotti, Kazuyo Sejima, Wilfried Wang, Göran Schildt, Juan Navarro Baldeweg, Gert Wingårdh, John Patkau, Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Kaija Saariaho and Juha Leiviskä. According to the chair, Simo Paavilainen, the Symposium theme – Matter and Mind in Architecture – encourages to study the philosophical relationship between form, material and meaning in a world of “increasingly worsening environmental problems, population overgrowth, the decrease of material resources and growing unemployment.”
The book contains a cd with music composed by Kaija Saariaho (e.g. Lichtbogen; Maa, part V; Jardin, secret II; Du Cristal; NoaNoa; and Lonh).
The copy in stock is in very good condition; the cd is attached (not tested). The dust jacket shows some minor shelf wear. The pages are clean and the binding is fine.
