Suomalaisia puukaupunkeja – Finnish Wooden Towns

Like in most European cities, many of the small wooden towns in Finland were largely demolished in the name of progress in the 1960s. This survey from the mid-1990s focuses on the then actively developed repair and maintenance tools of the existing fragments of the traditional townscapes.

The report emphasises the roles of planning and inventory methods that the building inspection authorities and architects have at their disposal. The text consists of case-specific analyses of eight historic wooden towns: Porvoo, Rauma, Naantali, Tammisaari, Kristiinankaupunki, Loviisa, Kaskinen, and Hanko. These are framed by three introductory articles about the specific features of wooden town architecture and their inventory methods. All in all, the report is an illuminating read for anyone interested in traditional Finnish town planning and the modern history of preservation methods and theories.

The item for sale is an ex-library book in relatively good condition. There are some pencil underlinings on some of the pages, but the pages including a map appendix are all there.
