Suomen tekijät – Finland Creators is an exhibition catalogue which was published in connection with the jubilee exhibition of the Retretti Art Society in 1992. The exhibition and the catalogue examine Finnish art, architecture, design and culture at the turn of the 20th century.
The richly illustrated book contains articles that explain the state history of Finland, Finnish and cultural and political life, the international phenomena in Finnish art, the emergence of industrial art, developments in architecture between 1890 and the 1920s, and Finnish photography in the early 20th century. The authors are all recognised experts in their field: Raimo Fagerström, Pekka Suhonen, Salme Sarajas-Korte, Anna-lisa Amberg, Pekka Korvenmaa and Pirjo Porkka.
The wonderful illustration shows some of the most well-known art pieces, design objects and buildings together with historical photographs, prints and drawings from the era. The highlights include celebrated classics such as Forging of Sampo (Sammon taonta) by Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1893), Wage Slaves (Raatajat rahanalaiset) by Eero Järnefelt (1893), competition entry for the Helsinki Railway Station by Eliel Saarinen (1904), and examples of Eliel Saarinen’s Jugendstil furniture. All the texts are in English and Finnish.
