The Architecture of Tokyo 1945–57 – 東京の建築 1945–57 (Tokyo Society of Architects & Building Engineers, 1958) is a collection of architectural pictures published in commemoration of the 5th anniversary of the foundation of the Tokyo Society of Architects & Building Engineers. The book has been compiled by Mosuke Morita, Atsuki Yakushiji, Shigeru Ito, and edited by Haruo Okawara, H. Hayakawa, and M. Honjyo.
The scars of the World War II, as indicated by the zones marked red on the cover of this book, were severe beyond imagination. Post-war Tokyo, however, has shown rapid progress in rehabililation. Although the reconstruction activities still lack in fundamental town planning, the level of individual architecture now exceeds pre-war levels. The architecture of Tokyo, whether it may be good or bad, can be regarded representative of contemporary architecture in Japan. Here we have selected 184 examples of works selected from the wide variety of buildings completed during the 12 years since the end of the War. We hope that this will prove to be of value to those who wish to grasp the essence of the architecture of modern Japan.
The text is in Japanese, but there is an English supplement. The book is full of black-and-white architectural photos and drawings.
Our copy in stock is in good condition. The pages are clean, no markings except for an inscription on the first flyleaf. The binding shows no signs of weakening. The dust jacket, which has some small dust stains, is in a protective plastic envelope.
