The Modern House by F.R.S. Yorke (The Architectural Press 1957) presents examples of modern villa architecture and residential building 1926-56. The examples are all over the world and present, for instance, Marcel Breuer’s house at Wiesbaden (1933), Alvar and Aino Aalto’s own house in Munkkiniemi, Helsinki (1936) and Villa Mairea (1938), Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye (1930), and Philip Johnson’s Wiley House in New Canaan, US (1953).
This book concerns the individual villa type of house; and though the author does not pretend that the building of villas is a good or even possible solution to the problem of housing the people, he does believe that until land is so controlled that flats can be planned in proper relation to neighbourhoods and to open space the majority of people will continue to want to live in detached or semi-detached houses, and it is important that the relation of the small house to modern architecture and tot he modern social system be appreciated.
