This second volume of Alvar Aalto Library in Vyborg – Saving a Modern Masterpiece is part of the series which documents the award-winning restoration project of Alvar Aalto’s Viipuri Library (1935). The book is published by the Finnish Committee for the Restoration of Viipuri Library and it covers the restoration procedures undertaken after 2010. It also includes expert articles about Alvar Aalto’s take on functionalism, principles of library architecture, and detailed accounts of the processes and management of the challenging restoration project.
Like in Part 1, the illustration is bountiful and informative: the book includes photographs of the library both in its original, pre-restoration and restored condition. The illustration also displays original drawings and documentary photos taken during the restoration. The articles are written by the key professionals who participated in the long and demanding restoration process: Maija Kairamo, Eric Adlercreutz, Tapani Mustonen, Helen Rogozina, Ana Tostões and Tommi Lindh.
The restoration of this modern landmark was awarded the World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize in 2014. The restoration was also listed in the Finnish Architecture Biennial Review 2016.
