The Art of Black Africa by Elsy Leyzinger (Studio Vista 1976) is a comprehensive presentation of themes, styles and representational ideas of African art.
We no longer measure art by the Greek ideal of beauty, or by the degree to which it is true to life. The first thing we look for today is the expression of spiritual ideas in an artistically convincing form. From the very first, African artists have fulfilled this requirement to an astonishing extent.
— Introduction in The Art of Black Africa by Elsy Leyzinger (Studio Vista 1976)
The text is in English and it is a translation of the original German edition published by Verlag Aurel Bongers in 1972 and 1976. The book has been richly illustrated with black-and-white and colour photographs.
The copy in our stock is in pretty good condition. The pages are clean without any markings, and the binding is fine. There is some age-related yellowing on the upper edges of the pages. The cloth-bound covers are fine; there is no dust jacket. The previous owner has marked the book with a signature on the first fly leaf.
