[In English, please scroll down) Pari viikkoa sitten tuli piristävän värikylläinen lähetys Hatje Cantzin laatukustantamosta. Kolme kevään uutuuskirjaa löytyy nyt myös meidän valikoimistamme. Merkittävin näistä uutuuksista lienee vihreänä hehkuva Otti Berger: Weaving for Modernist Architecture, joka esittelee ensimmäistä kertaa Bauhausin ja modernismin suuriin tähtiin kuuluneen tekstiilitaitelija Otti Bergerin (1898–1944) uraa ja tuotantoa. Auschwitzin keskitysleirillä 1944 murhatun Bergerin ura jäi traagisesti kesken, mutta hän ehti mullistaa modernin tekstiilitaiteen ja jättää jälkipolvien perinnöksi laajan kokoelman täysin uudentyyppisiä kuosisuunnitelmia, tekstiilejä, verhoilukankaita, mattoja ja kudontatekniikkaan liittyviä innovaatioita. Suomalaisille tunnetuin Bergerin malli lienee Artekin tuotannossa yhä oleva Zebra-kangas.
Toinen uutuuskirja on pieni, sinikantinen kannanotto arkkitehtuurin yhteiskunnalliseen tehtävään ja arkkitehtuurissa(kin) yleistyneeseen viherpesuun. On Architecture and Greenwashing: The Political Economy of Space haastaa suunnittelijat arvioimaan kriittisesti oman suhteensa teknogiaan, rakentamisen rahavirtoihin ja arkkitehtuurin perinteisiin toimintamuotoihin. Onko esimerkiksi uuden rakennuksen suunnittelu lähtökohtaisesti arvostetumpaa kuin olemassaolevan rakennuksen muokkaaminen ja korjaaminen uutta käyttöä varten? Näppärän pienen, mutta sisällöltään painavan julkaisun kirjoittajina on muun muassa Architecture Climate Action Network, ja taustavoima Suomessakin ajankohtainen Charlotte Malterre-Barthes.
Kolmas värikylläinen mutta Suomessa todella ajankohtainen uutuus on András Szántón toimittama, loistavan punakantinen Imagining the Future Museum: 21 Dialogues with Architects. Museoinstituutio on kaikkialla länsimaissa käynyt viime vuosina läpi merkittävän murrosvaiheen ja muuttunut vanhoja tavaroita säilyttävästä monumentista taiteiden, historiallisen jäämistön ja kulttuuriperinnön yhteisöllistä merkitystä tutkivaksi toimijaksi. Miten tämä muutos näkyy museoarkkitehtuurissa? Suomessa ajankohtaisia uusia museohankkeita on ainakin kaksi: Arkkitehtuuri- ja designmuseon uuden museorakennuksen yleinen, kansainvälinen ja kaksivaiheinen suunnittelukilpailu käynnistyi 15.4.2024 ja Turun Historian ja tulevaisuuden museon kansainvälinen arkkitehtuurikilpailu on tätä kirjoittaessa tuomarointivaiheessa.

A couple of weeks ago, we received a refreshingly colorful shipment from Hatje Cantz’s quality publishing house, and the three new spring titles can now also be found in our selections. The most significant of these novelties is the glowing green Otti Berger: Weaving for Modernist Architecture, which presents for the first time the career and production of the textile artist Otti Berger (1898–1944), one of the great stars of Bauhaus modernism. Berger’s career was tragically cut short when she was murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944. However, she had already revolutionized modern textile art, leaving behind a wide collection of completely new types of pattern designs, textiles, upholstery fabrics, carpets, and innovations related to weaving technology as her legacy. One of the best-known Berger models to Finns is the Zebra fabric, which is still in production at Artek.
The second novelty book is a small, blue-covered statement that discusses the societal envelope of architecture and the unfortunately widespread greenwashing in architecture. On Architecture and Greenwashing: The Political Economy of Space challenges designers to evaluate their own relationship with technology, cash flows in the building industry, and traditional modes of operation within the field of architecture. For instance, is designing a new building always more valuable than repurposing and repairing an existing building? The contributors include the Architecture Climate Action Network and Charlotte Malterre-Barthes, currently making waves also in Finland, being the driving force behind the publication.
The third new item, super topical in Finland, is the brightly red-covered Imagining the Future Museum: 21 Dialogues with Architects compiled by András Szántó. Throughout the western countries, museum institutions have gone through a significant transition phase in recent years and changed from a monument that preserves old things to a networked actor that investigates the community significance of arts, historical remains and cultural heritage. How is this change reflected in museum architecture? There are at least two current new museum projects in Finland: the general, international and two-phase design competition for the new museum building of the Architecture and Design Museum started on April 15, 2024, and the international architecture competition for the Turku Museum of History and the Future is at the judging stage as I write this.
