The 8th International Alvar Aalto Symposium explored the prospects of architecture on the verge of the new millennium with the theme Architecture in the Year Zero. The symposium was chaired by Pentti Kareoja, and it was organised in Jyväskylä, Finland, in 2000. The organisers were the Alvar Aalto Academy together with the Alvar Aalto Foundation and The Alvar Aalto Museum, The Museum of Finnish Architecture, the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA, and the City of Jyväskylä. The book contains the Symposium keynote lectures delivered by Luis Fernández-Galiano, Kristian Gullichsen, Jan Olav Jensen, Billie Tsien, Ákos Moravánszky, Shigeru Ban, Enrique Norten, Annette Gigon and Carlos Ferrater.

What if architecture in the new millennium could start out from a clean sheet? Everything is zeroed, anything is possible! The spotlight reveals the state of architecture today and its future. What are the provisions we would choose to have with us for building in the future from the shopping basket of the last one thousand years? Should we take the whole of architectural tradition, or would we just pick out Modernism, for example? What are the values that should be approved as doctrines for the new era? What is the importance of individuality and genius loci, or will the architecture of the future be a global language in the global media?
— Pentti Kareoja, Architecture in the Year Zero, The 8th International Alvar Aalto Symposium, p. 6.
